Question: Hi Dr. Harv, In light of the recent EIA cases near Prince Albert do you think people will be more apt to have their horses tested? Do you perform the test & does the sample still have to go to Ontario for the results? Thanks :)

Answer:  EIA testing is done in Saskatoon with a 2 day turnaround. You test no earlier than 30 days prior to when you will be crossing the border.

Cougar Takes Cow Near Saskatchewan River

posted by Horse Owner Today    |   January 29, 2015 10:08

A cougar took down a 1400 lb cow in the middle of a stubble field close to the Saskatchewan River, approximately 50 miles from Saskatoon.

The cat ate at the kill site.
The cougar then removed the skin from neck and shoulder with surgical precision, no tears.
The cougar then fed, eating approximately 40 pounds of meat from the neck and shoulder. No others eat while the cougar is feeding.

Note the differences between cats and scavenger feeding patterns.   Cougars eat meat.  Scavengers eat the anus/intestines first.
As a comparison see the moose carcass, the intestines and anus are consumed first by scavengers.

Near Fatality Via Accidental Injection

posted by Horse Owner Today    |   January 28, 2015 11:36

Micotil is a drug used to treat pneumonia in calves and lambs.

While it is very effective, it is also lethal to humans in small doses!

Recently a producer accidentally injected 5.5 cc of micotil into his wrist.  He was taken by ambulance to ICU where he was treated with supportive care for several days.

The learning point here is to always inject micotil using a one handed injection technique.  Know the potential problems and #besafe.

Great news - The injured producer will be discharged very soon.  The doctors involved with his case are putting together a paper on the circumstances and presenting it this summer in a San Francisco toxicology seminar.
