I Ride!

I ride.  That seems like such a simple statement.  However, as many women who ride know, it is really a complicated matter.  It has to do with power and empowerment.  Being able to do things you might have once considered out of reach or ability.


I have considered this as I shovel manure, fill water barrels in the cold rain, wait for the vet/farrier/electrician/hay delivery, change a tire on a horse trailer by the side of the freeway, or cool a gelding out before getting down to the business of drinking a cold beer after a long ride.


The time, the money, the effort it takes to ride calls for dedication.  At least I call it dedication.  Both my ex-husbands call it "The Sickness".  It's not a sport.  It's  not a hobby.  It is what we do and, in some ways, who we are as women and human beings.


I ride.  I hook up my trailer and load my gelding.  I haul to some trailhead somewhere, unload, saddle, whistle up my dog, and I ride.  I breathe in the air, watch the sunlight filter through the trees and savor the movement of my horse.  My shoulders relax.  A smile rides my sunscreen smeared face.  I pull my ball cap down and let the real world fade into the tracks my horse leaves in the dust.


Time slows.  Flying insects buzz loudly, looking like fairies.  My gelding flicks his ears and moves down the trail.  I can smell his sweat and it is perfume to my senses.  Time slows.  The rhythm of the walk and the movement of the leaves become my focus.  My saddle creaks and the leather rein in my hand softens with the warmth. 

I consider the simple statement;  I ride.  I think of all I do because I ride.  Climb granite slabs, wade into a freezing lake, race a friend through the Manzanita all the while laughing and feeling my heart in my chest.  Other days just the act of mounting and dismounting can be a real accomplishment.  Still I ride.  No matter how tired or how much my seat bones or any of the numerous horse related injuries hurt.  I ride.  And I feel better for doing so.


The beauty I've seen because I ride amazes me.  I've ridden out to find lakes that remain for the most part, unseen.  Caves, dark and cold beside rivers full and rolling are the scenes I see in my dreams.  The Granite Stairway at Echo Summit, bald eagles on the wing and bobcats on the prowl add to the empowerment and joy in my heart.


I think of the people, mostly women, I've met.  I consider how competent they all are.  Not a weenie amongst the bunch.  We haul 40 foot rigs.  We back into tight spaces without clipping a tree.  We set up camp.  Tend the horses.  We cook and keep safe.  We understand and love out companions, the horse.  We respect each other and those we encounter on the trail.  We know that if you are out there riding, you also shovel, fill, wait, and doctor.  Your hands are a little rough and you travel without makeup or hair gel.  You do without to afford the "Sickness" and probably when you were a small girl, you bounced a model horse while you dreamed of riding a real one.  Now you are there.  I ride.

Simple, Quick Breakfast

Morning meals are the most difficult to plan in our household.  Cardboard cereal isn't a part of the menu! 

This is a simple, easy to prepare breakfast that is sure to perk everyone's tastebuds up, giving your entire family a great start.

There is a formal recipe (which I don't have yet) from Ancient Path Produce and Grain (watch for their new Fb page and website coming soon) using Red Fyfe fresh ground flour.

Here is my version of Breakfast Streudel...

Baking pan with butter melted to cover bottom

Thin sliced apples to cover bottom of pan

Make one cup of pancake batter

Pour on top of the sliced apple

Top with brown sugar and cinnamon to taste

Bake at 400 F for 25 minutes

In Search Of Success

Gratitude is absolutely essential to human beings.  Gratitude keeps us grounded.  Gratitude reminds us of “the really important stuff” in our lives.  Gratitude is defined as “the quality or feeling of being grateful or thankful” (

Do you take time to acknowledge “the really important stuff” in your daily life or do you con yourself into saving it up for the big one?  For example are you thankful for that first cup of coffee in the morning or are you going to be very thankful when you win the lottery?

Saving up for the big one is a common trap.  In my personal opinion that is procrastination.  Procrastination is a very slippery slope. Put a foot out there and suddenly you are careening, wildly, out of control, wondering “what just happened?”

How am I grateful?  When? And why?
I take time throughout each day to be grateful.  Each morning I express a prayer of gratitude for that first cup of coffee, the fragrance, the flavor, for that moment of peace when nothing else matters but the silky slide of hot coffee down my throat!

I was grateful several days ago when I blew a rear tire on a busy highway.  Some may read this and think “you’re nuts, why be grateful for a blown tire”!  My answer to that is simply, if it was a front tire, our vehicle could have and probably would have rolled; in that context, a rear tire is not a huge issue. 
I was grateful that I knew how to change the tire.   My son knows the procedure and thought of it as an adventure (he is 7)! 
I was grateful that the tire was changed out, torqued and we were back on the road in 10-15 minutes.  My years in the oilfield and on the farm paid off in spades.  Expressing gratitude, very quickly in this case, gave me confidence and an inner sense of peace to deal with the situation quickly and effectively.

I was grateful again, as our beautiful son Wyatt was fitted with his hearing aids.  The light that blossomed on his face when they were activated was amazing.  
I am so grateful each time Wyatt says “Mom I am exploring sounds”, I offer up thanks for the professionals, resources and support we have.

My takeaway message is simple:  express gratitude often, be grateful for “the really important stuff” in your life, be sincere in your expression, and teach your children gratitude.

Procrastination – The Great Evil

I claim to be a self-appointed, self-taught queen of procrastination.   The change came during my stressful and prolonged divorce.  Suddenly, I was able to talk my way out of positive timely actions, I was procrastinating and before I realized it, I was a pro!

The , gives the definition of procrastination as:  to put off intentionally and habitually.

Interesting definition, so the real question that needs to be answered is why?  Why procrastinate?    The simplest answer is “fear of success”.   
Procrastination is simply shooting yourself in the foot of your success, you are guaranteed to stumble and limp along your path instead of striding confidently towards your goals.  Success requires change, and change has both positive and negative consequences.   Fear of success is insidious, it sneaks up and suddenly you realize that you have missed achieving your goal not because of the big tasks, but because some small, vital task was incomplete …you shot yourself in the foot of your success!  Usually on purpose!

"Fear of success" was not my real fear.  The real fear was the side effects of success, how could I be successful and remain low profile thereby protecting myself. 

I would like to share insights from a very successful Canadian business woman, Gloria Boyne.

Movitate Yourself: Ten Ways To Get Unstuck

Decisions, Decisions…
Daily Decisions Decide Destinies!  We must understand that greatness exists in all of us, but it is up to us to put it out of ourselves.  Big Dreams require you to grow in order to achieve them.

Here are 10 Ways to Get Unstuck:
1.    Stop thinking you are fragile. If your perception of and response to failure were changed, what would you attempt to achieve?
2.    Assert control over your life.   Watch your language.  Eliminate words like wish, maybe, hope and try;  instead say “I will make things better”!
3.     Stop worrying about obstacles.  Take Action – Work!  Have a “worry” Box to put all your worries in and once a week open it to deal with them all.

4.    Are you doing what you want with your career. If not, do something about it.  I AM NOT A VICTIM!   We can change our whole life and the attitude of people around us simply by changing ourselves.
5.    Choose a dream and make it a reality.  It takes one step at a time…it is a process.
6.    Follow your intuition…you may have to fake it until you make it!
7.    Stop procrastination.  Putting things off is a habit, use your 6 Most Important Things List daily.
8.    Let go of the labels that you or others have used to describe you.  Make new positive affirmations.
9.    Conquer your fear of failing.  Failure is the hallmark of success.  Without failure there would be no great successes.
10.    Learn to cope with fatigue.  Your energy level is directly related to your attitude and your finances.  Surround yourself with people who have achieved and accomplished a dream.
All great achievers are given multiple reasons to believe they are failures.  But in spite of that, they persevere.  Remember if you always do what you’ve done, then you will always get what you’ve always gotten.

"Real HOT, Real Life"

Welcome to “Real HOT, Real Life”!   The Time is Now!

Hi, my name is Bonnie Newton!  I am the driving force behind (HOT).  I am also Mom to a very active 6 year old boy and partner to an amazing man.  We live on a small farm, a full time job, run a herd of horses, a small business, and HOT.

My big why for embarking on the “Real HOT, Real Life” journey is simple….fitness, wellness, balance and abundance!  I have never lived a balanced life.  My priority is me, sounds selfish but it is not.   I must be fit to live a balanced life, to be the best I can be as a partner, a mother and a business owner. I must be well, my life must be balanced to live in abundance and this is the story of my journey.

Blaine Mackie of Mackie Physiotherapy said “Your physical self should lift up and enhance your mental self”.   My schedule has been bizarre for the past 3 years, working at a desk for hours daily, my physical self is dragging (some parts more than others). 

My first fitness goal is not to be a size 0, nor to achieve a perfect weight. I do not own a scale, never have.   My goal is to only carry useful muscle.  Fat is not useful, it is humiliating and unhealthy, a constant reminder of my “unbalanced life”.  I am trying to work up the courage to video myself and measure all the critical parts so I have a comparison.

My second fitness goal is to maintain a constant weight and body fat level.

How am I going to achieve my fitness goals?  Consistent nutrition plan, consistent exercise, and consistent hydration.

Which of these is toughest?  No contest there consistent exercise is the toughest goal.  I am busy and when trying to balance my schedule will remove exercise first.  No more!  Exercise is critical for me to be more productive, to maintain good health and maintain a high level of energy.  I enjoy exercise, just seem to be willing to sacrifice it and myself.

The hydration is second place.  I find it very difficult to drink adequate water so it has become a conscious exercise throughout the day.

The nutrition plan is what I find the easiest.  I like the food the Team Savino included in my nutrition plan, I like eating...ok honesty wins I love eating! (I can eat anytime, anywhere)
